Sumario: | Historically fishmeal has been the most important protein source in commercial aquaticfeeds. However, annual growth of greater than 10% per year has put increasing pressure onfish meal supplies. Currently world production of fishmeal is approximately 6 to 7 milliontonnes per year and this level of production is expected to remain stable over the next 10years (New, 1999). Since the supply of feed grade fish is limited, expansion of aquacultureproduction by 300% over the decade 2000-2010 (FAO 1995) will be dependent onlowering the inclusion rate of fishmeal in aqua feeds and replacing it with plant basedprotein sources. |
