| Sumario: | This article aims to analyze both the emotional impact and the perceptions of insecurity and institutional distrust expressed by citizens of Chilpancingo, Guerrero (Mexico), following the assassination of Mayor Alejandro Arcos Catalán. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combines content and emotion analysis of Facebook comments with ethnographic interviews conducted with local voters. The findings reveal that Facebook functioned as a space of affective resonance, amplifying feelings of sadness, fear, and anger, and articulating a collective response that questioned the legitimacy of public authority and highlighted the crisis of institutional trust. The interviews revealed how these emotions translate into everyday experiences of fear, vulnerability, and democratic disillusionment, although a symbolic appreciation of voting as a tool for transformation still persists. The study concludes that, in contexts marked by violence, social media not only mediate information, but also actively shape the public meaning of power, representation, and democracy. |
