Detoxification of Aflatoxin-Contaminated Maize by Neutral Electrolyzed Oxidizing Water
Published 2015“…These toxins have been shown to be hepatotoxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic and cause severe human and animal diseases. The effectiveness of neutral electrolyzed oxidizing water (NEW) on aflatoxin detoxification was investigated in HepG2 cells using several validation methodologies such as the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5- diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay, the induction of lipid peroxidation, the oxidative damage by means of glutathione modulation, the Ames test and the alkaline Comet assay. …”

Omega fatty acids production in an isolated native Chlorella sp. from northeast Mexico with improved growth using urine as nutritive medium
Published 2020“…An improvement was also observed in the production of fatty acids and proteins, where the cultivation of Chlorella sp. with the urine medium (MOB) showed an average production (%) of 17.22% saturated fatty acids (SUFA’s), 22.03% of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA’s) and 60.73% of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA’s), demonstrated also in the high concentrations of mainly linoleic and linoleic fatty acids in the microalgae. This work shows that human urine as a culture medium, provides enough nutrients to increase the production of biomass and oils; therefore, the use of this organic residue as a nutritive medium can be considered a suitable source for the production of essential fatty acids…”

Diversification of Fads2 in Finfish Species: Implications for Aquaculture
Published 2017“…The capabilities for biosynthesis of long-chain (≥C20) polyunsaturated fatty acid (LC-PUFA) of farmed fish have beenextensively studied in order to determine qualitative requirements for dietary essential fatty acids and to ensure high levelsof omega-3 LC-PUFA in the farmed products for human consumption. Although LC-PUFA biosynthesis comprises multiplesteps catalyzed by several enzymes, rate-limiting reactions in the pathways are controlled by fatty acid desaturases (Fads),enzymes introducing new double bonds into fatty acyl chains. …”
